I met Kevin at the launch party for the ECOBOARD Project. The event was an awesome celebration of the progress being made in creating sustainable surfboards. Kevin Seid has been shaping surf boards for over 25 years. Although he’s been known to make some pretty outstanding short boards, he began focusing his talent on stand-up paddle boards in 2007. Just as every person is defined by their contradictions, Kevin is marked by perfectionist tendencies and taking fun seriously. This combination plays out professionally and in his personal accomplishments as a paddleboarder. When he takes a break from crafting life-changing, grin-inducing boards, he’s in the water. Kevin averages around 20 SUP races and surf competitions a year, including four solo Molokai to Oahu Paddleboard World Championships (a 32-mile race he describes as “testing every facet of your being”). Kevin custom shapes surfboards and SUP boards in Haleiwa, Hawaii and San Francisco, California.
I met Daniel last summer while we were both learning to surf in Costa Rica. Daniel is one of those people who is very outgoing and an instantly likable kind of guy. He offers his kindness to strangers and he asked just about everyone who was staying at our hostel if they wanted to take trips in his rented car or visit a beautiful house he had access to. I stayed in touch with Daniel via facebook and we decided to meet up in Nicaragua several months later to further develop our love for surfing. While on that trip, Daniel had some life changing experiences which he describes in the video below. Visit his website www.notabout.org to learn more about his cause.
I met Todd in the parking lot of Blackies surf beach in Newport today after a fun surfing session. I noticed some really cool looking surfboards for sale and I asked some of the locals who they belong too. Todd introduced himself and shared his stoke. I learned the name of his company, Art In Motion, is used as a verb. It means “To embrace and live life to it’s fullest. To express oneself whole heartily and without compromise. To be an individual.”
Created out of necessity, Art in Motion is dedicated to designing, building and producing handmade surfboards, skateboards and clothing here in the good ol’ USA. In the day where corporation is king, Art in Motion takes the opposite approach. We believe quality craftsmanship and finished product is more important than profit margins.
Every once in a while, I meet someone who is stoked about teaching, they are just excited to see someone else progress. Today when I went surfing at Blackies near the Newport Pier, I met Sean, who embodies that spirit. I paddled out near him and with just a simple good morning and a smile, Sean opened his heart and shared countless tips that improved my surfing technique ten fold. I am grateful for people like Sean in the world and wanted to share his stoke. Dr. Dang let me know he is a dentist in the Irvine area and I will be sure to contact him for future dental needs. email@example.com
World Famous James Wade has faced many struggles in life and has always managed to come out on top. James has infinite determination and is one of the most motivated people I have ever met. James, like me, made family where ever he was in life and has been uplifting his family on a daily basis. Currently, he has a campaign to educate people about suicide prevention which is a cause that is close to his heart. Check out the videos he has made and try to make an effort to support his movement. View James’s body of work here http://www.youtube.com/user/JamesWade
Cody Lucich is an old friend and a kind soul. I had the honor of traveling with him on a cross country road trip in an old school bus to document the state of America. I learned a lot from Cody and I am happy to have reconnected with him recently. Cody is an amazing story teller and lives to share the stories of those who don’t have a loud voice. Please watch his trailer showing the fight indigenous people in Costa Rica currently face regarding land rights.
Tao Ruspoli is one of my oldest friends and is one of the few people who I can honestly say has contributed significantly to my outlook on the world. Tao is the biggest optimist you will ever meet, an amazing artist of cinema, photography, relationships, and life. He comes from a long heritage of stoked people and I am honored to share his stoke of flamenco music on this website. You can find more information about Tao by visiting his webpage www.taoruspoli.com.
My old friend Mike Jerugim has been helping me build this website out and recently told me about how he is stoked on Brazilian Dance Drumming. Below is a video of the troupe he is currently practicing with.
I asked Mike to write a little bit about his experience with the troupe and this is what he writes:
Imagine what your life would be like if you had a place where you could simultaneously enjoy the catharsis of beating the crap out of something until your hands and arms went numb, dancing your ass off, and chanting and yelling until your throat hurt. I can’t imagine my life without this. While I’ve only been a member of the Zuruba Afro-Brazilian drum troupe here in Montréal for just over 20 weeks, I have formally adopted a new, weekly ritualistic ablution. The group is mixed levels, with different drum parts to suit different skill levels. The band leader, Martin Bonin, is a gifted and energetic madman, and the community around the troupe is vibrant and supportive; the elders guiding and mentoring the apprentice newbies. Add to this choreographed dancing and chanting, and man oh man, what an amazingly fun time! For this I am positively and truly STOKED!!!
The Resistance is a “a game of secret identities, deception, and deduction”. It is a party game modeling a battle between a resistance group and the spies infiltrating it. It is similar in structure to party games such as Mafia or Werewolf, where a small, secret group of informed players (the “Imperial Spies”) attempt to destroy a larger group they’re infiltrating (the “Resistance Movement”), while the larger group attempts to ferret out the spies and eliminate them. The Resistance uses slightly different mechanics from similar games, designed to avoid player elimination and increase available information for player decisions.
